A Working America Needs Leaders with Heart and a Soul Not Sold to the Money Devils

"All public service is a trust, given in faith and accepted in honor." Senator Bob Casey (D-PA)

But where are these devoted public servants?

What is preventing Congress from committing themselves to job creation rather than draconian abortion legislation… job creation rather than defunding Planned Parenthood… job creation rather than partial closure of the FAA over union organizing… job creation rather than busting unions… job creation rather than unconscionable cuts to social programs… job creation rather than the exclusion of revenue increases to any debt debate.

If as Senator Bob Casey so eloquently states… “All public service is a trust, given in faith and accepted in honor”… why are we left to believe a Republican agenda to “one-term” President Obama is the answer to why not… job creationjob creationjob creation!

"Path to Prosperity"

Our “path to prosperity ” should not be a bullet train hurdling at speeds in excess of 150mph tracking right through the middle-class, the poor and most vulnerable of our society. It should not be a rampaging bulldozer clearing a path through America’s middle-class neighborhoods foreclosing on our obligations to those suffering unemployment and the loss of their homes.

“We made a promise decades ago to help provide critical services to those in need — to help them feed their families and find jobs,” Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said.

America’s promise of a better life for those who work their entire lives should not include a ’retraction clause’ to the American Dream based on the inability of America’s leaders to lead.

TOO OLD AND TOO UNEMPLOYED TO GET A JOB - JOBCAST RADIO

And so what's next?

Finding work is near impossible for those of us who have spent a lifetime contributing, especially those of us without degrees or whose degree skill-set has aged along with us.

The elderly unemployed are especially hard-hit when job training is required. Like other job benefits the cost for most employees over 55 includes higher salaries, higher medical costs, and a shorter return on job training expenses.

“Of all the flash points in the debate over how to make sure Social Security is well funded for the long run, few generate as much heat as raising the retirement age. Today, the so-called normal or full retirement age is 66, up from 65 a decade ago. It is scheduled to increase by two months a year starting in 2017 until it reaches 67 in 2022. Meanwhile, 62 remains the age at which those who retire early can collect a percentage of their full benefits.”

Baby Boomer's Crisis

Lowering the age of retirement...

I believe the social security age needs to be lowered to open the work marketplace to younger people with the new skill-sets in technology, engineering, economics, environmental studies technologies required for today and tomorrow's industries allowing the aged population to retire at 60 or after 2 years of unemployment beginning after age 55.

  • Many of the 55-65 year old employees have years of salary increases, older job skills, and more costly medical benefits.
  • The potential with earlier retirement is for companies to hire 1-2 people for every retiree.
  • A younger workforce with less costly medical insurance benefits and a renewed insurgence of unemployment and social security taxed dollars revitalizing both of these social programs.
  • The opportunity to use sliding scale benefit payments for early retirees based on financial security allows for a gradual feed of beneficiaries into social security benefit payments, while making Medicare available at the age of 55.
  • I would invest in both at the same time with a voluntary retirement at 55years (waiving social security benefits to age 60) and a lowered-age retirement of 60years with benefits for those whose retirement is not secure.

How many greeters can Wal-Mart hire?

Like millions of Americans, I find myself unable to find employment after 40 years in the work force. I will be 60 years old at the end of August, am without insurance, losing my home and learning that after 40 years of contributing I find myself in need of a safety net that is being deconstructed at my hour of need.

  • Did I ever imagine I would enter my senior years vulnerable and poverty stricken... of course not!
  • Do I relish being a burden to my family, my country, my fellow Americans... of course not!

Do I believe America can be fiscally responsible and support their most vulnerable poor, seniors, children, and people with disabilities... of course we can!

"All public service is a trust..."

The obligation of the wealthy, of America's business leaders, political leaders, social leaders are being called to service... how could they not step up and answer to the moral integrity of America given the trust, faith and honor we bestow on them?

Great Hub KKalmes and welcome back. I do not understand why politicians continually talk about raising the retirement age for Social Security or cutting benefits. Raise the income threshold that money is withdrawn from employee paychecks. It is currently $106,800 and has not been raised in over 20 years. The U.S. has an obligation to its citizens to provide a social safety net to its poor, elderly, infirmed, and just plain working class citizens. These are cut while corporate tax breaks are sacrosanct. Let the Bush tax cuts expire and we will be well on our way to balancing the budget. Only half way but still a big down payment. They also need to invest in the unemployed like you and I and also invest in our future. Enough of this Tea Party nonsense of slash and burn. We need the national dialogue to take place on the Progressive playing field. Thanks for writing this KK.

Hello HS, so good to hear from you... I have been so delinquent here at HubPages writing for GayChicagoNews and almost 24/7 Twitter and FaceBook political and social activism. Need to write longer than 140 or 240 character articles... think my brain has become addicted to the shorthand thought process. It has however, kept me totally engaged and on top of my daily dose of news coverage.

Sending along a CBS Evening News interview I did last week... note: camera adds 15#s!

Great writing KKalmes, also loved your interview with CBS. Maybe you should check out http://newsparticipation.com a gathering place for citizens to have a conversation about what is happening in this country. All you need is a video camera to participate.

Great interview KK. Sorry to hear about your predicament. I have been out of work over 3 years but luckily I had a lot saved. It is beginning to disappear quicker now. Hang in there and I'm glad to hear you are still writing a lot and keeping up the good fight. How is your novel going?

Excellent points. I'm still working but classify as underemployed. Still, it's better than nothing. Good luck.

Hello MP, thank you for your kind remarks and for taking time to watch interview... most of the substance of our hour long interview is on the cutting room floor, but the point was well made with their intro and closing remarks. Will check out the site you shared... thank you!

Very kind of you to return after my lengthy hiatus away!

Hello Jeff, appreciate the feedback and read... hope you can improve your situation as well... our good luck depends on our individual engagement... stay the course!

Hello HS, thank you for watching the interview... as I mentioned to MP most of the substance is on the cutting room floor, but I think they didn't want my politics just my boo-hoo story... there's no crying in politics!

Take care my friends... xoxoxo

Hi Kevin, Good to see you again. Thought we'd lost you, though your name does pop up here and there as I read various sites with my morning coffee. Great writing here, as usual! Perhaps you'd like to read my hub "What we all need to understand about Social Security." As far as I can see, the only alternative left to us, those in the sixties, unemployed and now facing loss of the programs we paid for will be the Bureau of Constructive Suicide. That's right! As soon as we can no longer pay our own way, it's time for us to check-out. The government will set up local branches of the BCS, using the no-longer needed social security offices, and we will report there once our funds are depleted for a "dignified and pain free exit." What a savings to our government that will be! Our last patriotic act. After all, it's not as if we are innocent fetuses that need protection. No, we are the useless old who squandered our lives in self-gratification, becoming nothing more than a tremendous burden on our children, grandchildren and nation. Yes, I see it clearly. Lynda

Hello Lynda, so good to hear from you and my hiatus has been a combination of twitter addiction and a lack of motivation for long articles even though they keep me awake nights. Will definitely check out your article!

My only concern about BCS is that suicide would negate my life insurance policy... I am worth much more dead than alive at this juncture. Thought I'd leave the boys a beautiful brick structure in great Chicago neighborhood, but now I make sure that regardless of finances the life insurance policy gets paid first!

Sad state of affairs after 40 very productive years...

No BCS more informative posts. While so many struggle to survive, being kicked while they are down by the same programs they cultivated for the future, our elected voices sit fat and happy collecting their wealth. I honestly believe that no elected official should draw a salary larger than the median income of the area they represent. Put an end to their pension and for life benefits.

Hello FG, good to meet you and friend you... completely agree with "no elected official should draw a salary larger than the median income of the area they represent. Put an end to their pension and for life benefits."

They get rich in and out of office on our tax $$s and pulling the rug out from under our investments for our futures.

Appreciate the read...

I am saddened by our complacency to control of what is supposed to be a government for the people by the people.

We are still the richest country in the world but act like one of the poorest. If we don't change direction soon we will join the ranks of the poorest and it won't be an act. The small group of citizens the republicians work for will be alright. Good hub. We need some leaders to represent the middle class.

Hello GN, and thank you for the insights you are of course right... we need middle-class leaders... we are the 'people' being left out and are quickly losing ground. I did a phone interview with Current TV and hope to get opportunity to interview on film about the 'Great Wealth Divide' and the 'Disappearing Middle-Class'... hopefully before I have become the "Invisible Old Lady with the stolen WalMart shopping cart"...

Take care and never stop speaking out... #POTUSRebels forever!

Hello JS, good to have you back reading... I love an intelligent and receptive audience. You never know when a bad situation will turn good... keeps me on my toes. There was an hours worth of interview left on the editing room floor, but hopefully sounded cogent. I had a phone interview with Current TV this week and I hope it turns into film interview.

Government should not be able to break promises... they should not be able to divorce themselves from the people they serve and give those promise rings to corporations.

This makes me so sad when i realise exactly how badly treated some of your citizens are.

I am disabled, which means I get a "Mobility" car to get around. I paid into a Teachers' Retirement Fund when I was working, and collect a pension from that, I get the State Retirement Pension and even get a small amount from the West Australian government because i worked there as a teacher for three years. I own my own house and I virtually have everything I need, and a lot of what I want.

The unravelling of Social Security and the brick walls being set up by those selfish politicians in your country make my heart bleed.
