A New First Family

Dear Mr. President,

I have been meaning to write you for almost two years now congratulating you on your election win, on November 4th, 2008. I'm a terrible procrastinator when it comes to writing letters or sending birthday cards. My family knows they can expect their cards any time during the course of the year. I don't forget the day, I just find it hard to express how important the day is to me.

Close friends and fellow bloggers will find this hard to believe because I never seem to run out of things to write about and I am quite verbose in expressing the deathless prose that shoots like lightening out of the ends of my fingertips... I just proved my own point didn't I?

Your election win was truly the most exquisite victory I have ever participated in... vicariously participated in... winning 365 electoral votes to 173 that McCain received and capturing 52.9% of the popular vote to McCain's 45.7% fell into that area of exhiliration that transcends words, emotions that transcend the human body's ability to express the euphoria... tears, laughter, the need to hug everyone within arm's length, the awe of being speechless.

Add the icing on the election's monumental cake of sweet success, you transcended the human condition of our times to become the first African American to be elected president, delivering a victory speech before hundreds of thousands of supporters in Chicago's Grant Park that united a country divided, a country lost in apathy, a country derided across the globe, a country that took its blinders off and believed in everything it could possibly be.

And still the words aren't enough... I do not have the vocabulary or oratory skills required to do justice to my feelings of pride and conservancy... the guardianship of America would now be in the hands of an honorable man.

America the beautiful would return to its previous state of grace!

Speaking of the Human Condition

It didn't take long for the ugly side of American humanity to spring its ugly head, like a serpent from "Aliens" that announces its presence with slime before the deafening screech, those blinded to the possibility of your winning woke up and began devouring their own young rather than accept the alignment of stars, moons, milky ways and celestial beings that were with us on that spiritual and enlightened day.

The human condition that had conducted the business of governing for the previous eight years made the possibility of a Barack Hussein Obama win truly an act of God. The racial bigotry and hatred that has since become the mantra of so many of the neo-conservative, tea-party, uber-conservative right-wing Republican base is still reeling hardly able to function and completely caught off guard.

They could never have imagined the ground swell that would chase them from power.

They could never have imagined the strength of the individuals who would say "no more".

They could never have imagined their worst nightmare coming true.

And within months, their bias, bigotry, prejudice, intolerance, poor-sportsmanship, self-serving egos, unadulterated hatred would erupt from the bowels of the earth.

They could never have imagined this young-upstart, African-American, Columbia University and Harvard Law School graduate, first black president of the Harvard Law Review, intelligent, articulate, stately and honorable young man would be their President.

How dare you be all you could be... leaving them to stew in their own shallow and uninspiring self-righteous selves.

How dare you be a community organizer and civil rights attorney giving back to your community, your country, your sense of duty and fair-mindedness.

I am sure more than once the line from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" has been uttered behind closed doors... "Who is this guy?" and "Where did he come from?"

Well, it didn't take them long to answer their own questions with lies and accusations giving rise to the "birthers" in the hopes of toppling your legitimacy.

They represent the human condition at its worst, weakest, most sinister, divisive, destructive, hateful self.

Their cowardice, hate-mongering, egotistical, self-centered attempts to deride and divide our newly elected President from his country will not be heralded favorably in the history books.

They are writing their own epitaphs... here lies a dishonored public servant.

Yahoo Video - Obama in Milwaukee Labor Day

Most of all, thank you!

I do get a bit carried away once I get started and I have no patience for stupidity, arrogance and liars... so I apologize to you, Mr. President for my exuberance when writing about the dispassionate republican congressmen.

I am very much a "mama grizzly" when someone messes with my family, friends or my President. I am also tenacious and unforgiving when people victimize those they are supposed to be helping.

But, this is a thank you letter for all you have done for us! For the dedication and compassion you continue show for those of us middle-class Americans struggling, out of work, on the brink of personal disaster and facing the abyss of the unknown if we can't soon become whole again.

I know you live with our struggle and the passion you have for your Americans is devoted and enduring. I believe you have the ability and the intensity to salvage our economy and help us save our homes. I know you have remarkable tenacity in the face of daily derision from the naysayers who have not made any effort to help us, the American constituents who gave them their jobs.

It is time to show how the "spoiled", "lazy", "drug-addled", "disincentive-ised", "hobos", "safety-netted", "hammock -dwellers" respond to being labeled unfit to be "called Americans" when November elections give us the next opportunity to voice our THANX.

I wanted to say more about all your solid efforts...

  • the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 helping the economy recover from the deepening worldwide recession
  • the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the State Children's Health Insurance Program,
  • reversing Bush-era limited funding of embryonic stem cell research
  • the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act
  • the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act
  • the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
  • giving subsidies to private banks to give out federally insured loans increasing the Pell Grant scholarship awards
  • the Public-Private Investment Program for Legacy Assets
  • the successful Car Allowance Rebate System
  • a "new era" in U.S. foreign relations with Russia and Europe
  • the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

But I didn't want to embarrass you with too much praise...

The highest praise I can think to share with you is the fact that I am proud to be an American with President Barack Obama as my president.

I believe in you and know you are serving all of us with the utmost respect, concern, consideration, and with all the powers in your personal arsenal to improve our economic futures, the future of our planet, the improvement of world-wide relations, and the ending of the wars that bring us our security, but also bring us such heartache.

Thank you, Mr. President...

Ms. Kevin L. Kalmes

Editorial Review

From Publishers Weekly

Elected the first black president of the Harvard Law Review, Obama was offered a book contract, but the intellectual journey he planned to recount became instead this poignant, probing memoir of an unusual life.

From Booklist

Obama argues with himself on almost every page of this lively autobiographical conversation. He gets you to agree with him, and then he brings in a counter-narrative that seems just as convincing.

No time out chair for the President I see. Being a true Alien, and not one in slander only, I'd like to say how I remember the inauguration day and how hopeful the people looked. Being new here, I have often been taken aback by the vitriol thrown at this hard-working man; how he has been held responsible for all, though by its very nature the position of President holds limited power; and always surprised by the fanatic sense of emotions Americans seem to hold that go beyond logic or rationale. I come from a quiet and polite political place, so it has been a new experience.

Has he done well? I'm not qualified to say. I was disappointed by his clear backing down on the health-care issue and the sell-out to the corporate medical insurance status quo -- that I must say.

Will he survive and go on for another term? I live in the conservative south and listening to much I hear around me, I'd say the odds are long.

Nice article, and so refreshing to hear from the other side for a change. I was beginning to believe he had no supporters anymore.

Hello Lynda, I think given the appropriate time required to address all the ills of the past, he will rise to the expectations of all who love him and to the demise of all who don't. Health-care needed a start and can only get better just like Medicare and he understands this.

When you throw rice at a wedding for good luck it is best to take it out of the bag first... it's not an old Chinese proverb, but one of my own observations.

He's so much smarter than all of his detractors it's actually exciting to bear witness.

thanx for stopping by and commenting... I love how quickly you respond like you know I'm typing and when I finish.

Great hub. While I agree with a lot of what you said, I certainly have me own challenges for Obama and promises I am waiting for him to keep. Such as removing the lobbying door in washington. I think he has done a good job but I think we want to all see him do a Great Job.

Thanx LRC, I think you will see exactly what he can do beginning with keeping the House and Senate democratic majorities. And then you will see President Obama Part Deux... hold onto your sox!

He is a Man with vision and attitude... anyone who can quote Hendrix off the cuff... is pretty darn cool!

You have to believe in a person to succeed not fail for them to be able to reach their fullest potential.

thanx for stopping by... flattery from you is sincere praise indeed.

KKlames, I am not trying to argue politics with you by any stretch, but you have to realize both parties have, among their members, unscrupulous individuals. Both sides have, throughout history, had incidents of lying, cheating, questionable bbehavior.

I think anyone believing truly it is one party or another who always commits acts that are unethical or illegal should take a very detailed look into the annuls of time and objectively view what tales history has buried under layers of the dust from ages of government red tape. That curious sleuth will find the linen is soiled on both sides.

Hello UCGF, without a doubt there's plenty of mea culpa's to go around, but my sentiment is that there is a party that requires "mea maxima culpa" and more importantly there is the intentional pandering of lies to a very vulnerable and hostile group that is not as rational as you and I...

Great comment. Sadly yes a president is blamed for all even with his limited power. But did you say that when Bush was being blamed for "his" missteps. I am not going to argue politics with you, so say what ever you want. But honestly did you? And if you didn't well shame on you. Because you are absolutely right, and no matter how good or bad a president is or was in your eyes, they are all very hard working people. No matter how much hate or content you hold for any one of these men, do you think you could do any better? Unless you said the same thing about Bush, I will go out on a limb and say NO you can not.

The man screwed him self royally with Iraq, I don't think there are many people today that would disagree with that statement. But forget the man, and the stuff he did wrong and look at the policy that he put into place that did some good for america and all and all he wasn't such a bad president.

As for Obama, his rush with fame caused him to bite off more than he could chew. And what I mean by that is, he made a lot of promises he wasn't sure if he could keep before he got into office and knew what the actual limits of the president were. As some of this stuff is unknown to all until you are elected into this position. So yes he is blamed for something he can't control. Sound familiar?

And because of this, I don't think Obama will be remembered as a great president, because the "broken promises" he made before he knew if he could even make them, has caused a lot of his supporters to turn their back on him.

I don't agree with his politics, and I think him getting the Nobel Prize for Peace is a joke at its best moment. But the man has a tough job, and I can commend him for the bravery to take on such a position because I am man enough to admit I couldn't do it.

Than PT7886, appreciate the insights and agree that those that can do and those that can't sit back and bitch... I wasn't writing while George was in office although I doubt I would have been as kind to him especially toward the end and not so much because of who he was as a man, but because of the men he surrounded himself with that did not do him service.

take care...

Well as I said no one can deny, his last term was quite sad. I watched that movie about him called W, from what the producer of the film said was it was based mostly on fact ( I can't verify that) but if it is, and also if you look at some of his photos from the middle to end of his last term (not the dressed up ones for speeches and appearances but the "surprise" ones you can really see that something was taking a huge toll on the man much as the film portrays. Basically, the man knows he screwed up royally in his last 4 years.

But the deed was done, really the only choice he had was to stick to his guns at that point, and ride it out. Kind of a cross your fingers and hope for the best thing. But to be completely honest, the man has probably caught more flack over stuff he had no control over than any other president. After Iraq the man got blamed for everything even the weather literally. Does that justify what he did? of course not, nor does it give him a "free pass".

Yes on camera he may have been a bumbling idiot at times, but if you recall in his first term when he was enjoying the highest approval ratings any president has ever had to this day,(though there has only been one other so far to come after him)

we as a majority liked that about him, it made him seem more like a regular person. More approachable, if you will.

After the 9/11 induced patriotism began to fade with the invasion of Iraq, well that bumbling idiot way of talking became just another weapon of spite to those who hated him. Say what you will about any person you like or hate, if you become president of any country you are no fool.

Again I'm not trying to argue politics here, more I am asking some people who agree with Immartin's post to do some soul searching, if it is an excuse for one man, well its an excuse for them all. Because the sad fact is, with out the Congress backing him Bush could not have done any of that stuff we hate him so much for, and if memory serves that was a democrat Congress. Again, not to argue politics but just think back to that dark time so long ago in US history. Forgive me if I am mistaken about the majority in congress, but that is how I remember it. Please correct me if I am wrong, as I do not like to misconstrue facts if I know any better.

Thanks for the hub though I did enjoy the read.

I just wanted to clarify a point. My comments are not meant to bash Obama or praise Bush or take a political side. But just get you to think about the way you compare one man to another and what standards you use to make that comparison.

I am all for each of us having our opinions, but when you use a reason to cut a man some slack, and neglect that same fact to berate another, well you can see the double standards there.

Anyways my point was just to get you to think about why you hate one man, and use those same facts to further your love for another.

I am not and will not chose a side in this, it is not my intent, and I thank you for not trying to put me in that position in your last comment. Some times I just feel I don't say things right and I need to clarify my statements as I can ramble from time to time as you can see, and it so often makes no sense.

Hello PT7886, thanx for sharing your views with us, but it is a bit presumptuous of you to assume we need to be told to look at both sides or be impartial to all or partial to all where the facts are concerned.

I am not a journalist, but I do editorialize from my own perspective and ideologies.

Bush is gone and I'd have more respect for him if he would come out and support those efforts of this President and Congress where it is in the best interest of our country, but it is even in the end bi-partisanship that dictates the narrative.

pintails7886 profile image

pintails7886 Level 1 Commenter 20 months ago

Sure but as you said Bush is gone. And honestly if he did come out and support Obama do you think people would listen? The man is viewed as a moron by the vast majority of the nation still to this day even though he is gone.

I think many would be offended if he did. Some may even accuse him of trying to hurt Obama's plans. Maybe I'm being presumptuous again, but I don't think it would do any good for Bush to come out and speak now. I think it would actually do a lot more harm to the problems of the nation that we face right now.

Bi-partisanship is not the job of former Presidents or even the sole concern of the elected officials. It is indeed the job of every single american citizen. Maybe I'm being presumptuous again but until the american people can become bi-partisan how can we expect our elected officials?

But maybe you are right with Bushes total of what 35-37% approval and Obama's 30-34% we could have a little more than half the country on the same page.

You really think that the country has changed for the better in the last 21 months under President Obama?

When was the last time that you heard someone referred to as Irish, Polish, Italian or other American. Obama could have just as well been called the first Asian American President.

The only increase in jobs are those in the Federal Government. The country is a hell hole and we are going lower everyday.

Do you know where I can score some brimstone?

KKalmes profile image

KKalmes Hub Author 20 months ago

Hello OD,

Let's just say President Obama did not inherit two wars... do you think he would have made up WMD's to "shock and awe" Iraq?

Let's just say President Obama inherited the end of President Clinton's presidency a federal government running a yearly budget surplus, and the national debt at about $6 trillion... instead of the end of President Bush's presidency, the federal government running a record budget deficit of more than $1 trillion in fiscal 2009, and the national debt growth to $10.6 trillion... after 21 months would we be on the verge of a potential 2nd dip recession?

Let's just say if President Obama had inherited the job growth of Clinton's more than 22 million jobs created in eight years... rising median incomes, poverty rates at their lowest levels in decades, strong business investment and new business formation, a booming stock market, sound capital markets driven by the promise of new technologies, the United States poised to enter a new phase of growth and development, with the benefits spread across its society... instead of President Bush's exit in January 2009 after eight years and no gain in Dow... would we be looking at foreclosure rates, banking and investment firm failures, a wall street collapse, auto industry collapse after 21 months?

Let's just say if President Obama had not inherited the Bush loss of more than 2.6 million jobs in 2008 alone, and the unemployment rate (which stood at 4.2% when President Clinton left office in January 2001) at 7.2% in January 2009, as President Bush left office... would we be looking at 9.6% unemployment after 21 months?

This doesn't even begin to discuss eight years of no energy policies and continued deregulation to the point of catastrophe... you may not want to look back, but today's economic and political picture is an accumulation of years of poor if not criminal decision making and poor if not criminal policy making decisions.

The Bush administration began in 2001 with the passage of a $1.35 trillion tax cut -- a cut many economists and analysts felt was not necessary, given that the U.S. economy was already recovering from the mini 2001 recession.

Take the blinders off... 21 months of serious, honest, constructive, leadership has moved the country in the right direction... slowly because of the republican drag on all efforts.

But an 8% reduction in the deficit in 2009 suggests even on his worse day President Obama can beat the odds of a negative congress and a truculent tea party and is right and justified to continue his policies to right this ship.

Hi KKalmes,

I need to ask a question, this African American thing.

If you are born in America are you not first an America. I was born in South Africa but my fore fathers can from Scotland. I am a South African with blood roots that may go back to Scotland. I am not A Scotish South Africa. I am South Africa.

Don't you think its time the American born in America should be called just that an American. Some are 8 or9 generation Americans.

Good Hub, I will send it up

Hello KR, you are right on so many levels... the need to create a special category for every combination of birth and ethnicity, religion and ethnicity, etc is absurd. Born in America means you are an American. Although, there are politicians a some very disturbed Americans who think they can exercise their mean-spirited, bigotry and change the constitution regarding this.

I don't think so... thank you for reading and commenting appreciate the visit from down under.

Welp kiddo, It's funny to me how all the "yes we can" hoopla, transended into MILLIONS more getting into the unemployment lines, millions more loosing their homes, while big business, (actually HUGE business), recieved the bounty of the so called "stimulus", a possible Islamic house of worship at ground zero, and Mrs. Obabma referring to an AFRICAN NATION as her husband's "homeland".

I'm sorry to say, "yes we can" has turned into "but we ain't gonna" in the minds of more than a few!

Sorry to be so disagreeable here, but ideals fall by the wayside as reality sets in.

Hello RA, glad to make your acquaintance... I find it odd how many people are willing to suggest that all the problems we are facing just showed up since the 2008 election results. What's amazing to me is that President Obama is still willing to stand in front of the out control bullet-train that is hurtling directly at him doing well over 200 mph, no breaks (because republicans have all stepped aside), no Spiderman or Iron Man in sight (because even they would duck these bullets), no support from the cowardly democrats (because they won't stand with him and are cowering under their desks), and everyone on the right thinks that their "perceptions are reality" (because they are the only enlightened ones).

Ideals can be reality, and faith can be inspiring, and trust is not childish, and "yes, we can" is still alive and well!

The right maintains they are the "chosen people", but where's the faith it takes to believe in all that "can be and should be" even in the face of gross malfeasance on the part of these very same people (Republicans pretending to be on the side of Main Street), who have done nothing to move forward through the path of the bullet-train, but instead deny complicity and promote empty promises while jumping into the nearest foxhole.

Did anyone expect the bullet-train would be stopped in its path by one man in two years, while the Republicans became bystanders and in fact, fueled the fires of the bullet-train with empty, truculent rhetoric?

Whose reality is nothing more than perception?

Not mine...

I realize Obama came into an office full of problems. All I'm saying is: He hasn't solved any of them. Plus he has broken so very many promises. He promised to get rid of the Patroit Act, for example. He didn't. He made promises about decreasing the war in the middle east, which has increased. The list goes on and on.

At this moment the National Debt is at $13,679,930,984,402.52, and the government is buying up it's own debt, because other nations are dumping it. And that's a sign of national collaspe historically. Plus the debt has continued to increase by $4.18 BILLION per day since 09/28/2007/. Go figure.

Even his own people admitted that he has set records in National Debt. Go read this, and let me know what you think.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/po

I'm not making stuff up because I don't like the guy. I'm saying I DID like the guy! But I'm not so foolish to continue to believe lie after lie! And when I have made a mistake in judgement, I'm willing to admitt it. No matter how disappointed I am.

Do I think things are going to be fixed with the next person "elected" to the highest office in the land? No way Baby! I can only see things getting worse. We are in a trend, and if you follow historic trends, you will realize, we may just tank. I hope not. But the "big picture" is glaring us in the face.

Thanks for letting me comment!

Hello RA, never say never and none and always because chances are that can't be the truth.... he has completed 70% of his promises and yes there were compromises involved. He has an agenda for four and possible eight years that complete his promises and leave this country better off... let's give him a chance.

If someone hired me to turn around a huge company that was headed fro complete failure and I made a commitment to get the job done in four years, I sure would hate to be fired in 18 or 20 months because we hadn't accomplished the reorganization sooner.

I sincerely PROMISE I'm not trying to be confrontational, but if votes really count, how did Bush jr. make it into office? Or Nixon for that matter?

I totally respect your dedication, and your hopeful beliefs toward the political machine. But why does Obama turn his back to the flag? And just how exactly did a first term senetor become the commander in cheif?

And when you say give him the chance to succeed... what choice do I have? He's there in office. He's doing things. Like signing a healthcare bill, (with lots of other stuff stuck in beteewn the lines) that did NOT have a popular following. In fact states have rallied against that partitular agenda.

The governor of the state of Texas has been in the state's capital pushing for secession from the union! The second largest state in the nation, full of resourses, history, beauty, and the top man in the state wants to depart from the union. Wonder why? Maybe because the people of his state are tired of the lies, and the manipulation. The lax immigration policies. The Texans being killed on the boarder. The jobs that have been lost. The people who are suddenly homeless, while the big bankers all get fatter.

I don't know... it's just a thought.

Like I say, I respect your dedication. I just hope in the long run you don't look back with too much disappointment, and wonder why you used so much energy to promote something you were decieved into believing so strongly.

Peace and love.

Hello RA, maybe the governor of Texas is a turncoat and the homeless are not a political tool to use when it's convenient and forgotten after election day. The homeless are a reality 24/7 and 365 under every president's watch.

Thank you for your sincere concern... if faith was a tool to get what we want everyone would become believers on their death bed.

I believe and my dedication will always be fruitful regardless of the outcome.

I have a friend from California who lost just over $90,000 in the stock market when the "Stimulus package" was put in place. Another friend who's 401K, (which she stocked piled for years at a very demanding job), somehow vanished into thin air. My mother, who worked her butt off all her life and is now on a fixed income via Social Security, will not see an increase to offset inflation this year. My brother who has had his nose to the grindstone since the early 70's and who's credit rating has been over the top forever, suddenly finds his credit card interest rates exploding, and his credit scores tanking, even though he has not failed on his payments.

I find all these sad facts within this presidental term, at the very least... curious. Don't you?
