President Obama
President Obama

I've Got Your Back Mr. President

If our President's name was Joseph Smith and he was white (republican or democrat) and he had accomplished all that President Barack Obama has accomplished in his first 18 months with the imminent threat of an economic collapse at home, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, facing more immediate and far-reaching crises than any president since Franklin Roosevelt... who would be attacking him?

Actions and Results:

  • Detroit carmakers bail out and passage of $862 billion economic stimulus bill that poured money into transportation systems, energy projects and education programs.
  • Set tougher fuel-efficiency standards for cars and launched a $4.3 billion education initiative challenging schools to improve their performance.
  • Appointed the first Hispanic to the Supreme Court, Justice Sonya Sotomayor, and nominated another woman, Elena Kagan, to the bench.
  • Signed a deal with Russia to reduce stockpiles of strategic nuclear warheads.
  • Passage of the $940 billion, 10-year health care bill in March.
  • Pushed through more substantial domestic-policy initiatives in 15 months than most presidents do during their entire tenures.
  • Moving the Senate toward passage of the most sweeping financial regulatory change since the aftermath of the Great Depression, a bill that holds Wall Streets feet to the fire after risk-taking that fed the meltdown in 2008.
  • Reshaped the American landscape in fundamental ways: imposing stricter rules on credit card companies, designating more than 2 million acres of public land as protected wilderness, expanding equal-pay protection for women.

There seems to be more hate, racial bias, and ignorance dictating the political conscience of our country these days then I can remember in decades past. Where is our pride in our country, our president, our freedoms, our contributions to community, society and the world as a whole?

Take a step back... close your eyes if necessary, but see the reality of our President's successes and stand behind him to accomplish even more.

He's got your back isn't it time you had his?

President Obama - Why I Love My President

"President Obama's years of public service are based around his unwavering belief in the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose. In the Illinois State Senate, he passed the first major ethics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and their parents. As a United States Senator, he reached across the aisle to pass groundbreaking lobbying reform, lock up the world's most dangerous weapons, and bring transparency to government by putting federal spending online."

Obama Most Popular Leader, Poll Finds

President Barack Obama remains by far the most popular world leader among people in major Western nations and is the one political figure on whom people consistently pin their hopes in the economic crisis, according to new polls conducted for the International Herald Tribune. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/29/world/europe/29iht-poll.html?ref=world

Sunday April 25, 2010

This according to ... those polled by Harris Interactive in Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the U.S. So not too surprising.

"Obama won 77 percent backing, one percentage point higher than in November, in the poll conducted by Harris Interactive for France24 and Radio France-Internationale.

The [Dalai Lama] was at second place at 75 percent, followed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at 62 percent. http://worldnews.about.com/b/2010/04/25/obama-most-popular-world-leader.htm

Tribe Recalls Obama At HLS

“There are those in whom challenge stirs greatness, those who rise to challenge rather than letting it break their stride or spin their compass,” said Tribe about Obama, the Democratic presidential candidate, whom he called “the most impressive and talented of the thousands of students I have been privileged to teach in nearly 40 years on the Harvard faculty.”

On the eve of (2008) presidential election, Professor Laurence H. Tribe ’62 spoke fondly once more of his former student Barack Obama and his “audacity of hope” for the country in his morning prayers in Memorial Church’s Appleton Chapel.

Unfortunately the folks who want to hate, those who are completely ignorant or refuse to review the facts, seem to command more headlines than those who really care about the basics, which include taking current events at face value.

From Reagon to Bush, DEREGULATION, the Republican mantra, has opened the door for everything that is now on President Obama's plate. Those on the right, are more than willing to lay these problems, that they created, on his doorstep.

To control this kind of frenzy, Bush II, would have had his people stop gaping before it hit the presses as UnAmerican. Evildoers! OMG Bush is evil incarniate.

This is not an easy world. There is no quick fix to any of it. Barack Obama is a good man. He is thoughtful, and he is caring. If he was white, he would not be under the kind of attack he is now. I would suspect he would have his detractors just because, however, I have not in my 60 years of living ever seen this kind of hatefulness, this kind of outright disrespect for a leader or blatant lies directed toward a President. Considering the past few, Nixon, Reagon & Bush, this current President has more integrity than the 3 put together and then some.

I have no doubt that color is the issue. I have no doubt that anything that can be done to make this President fail is the goal. I have no doubt that when push comes to shove, the majority of the folks who voted for him will vote for him again, just because we do not want the alternative. Racists in power. BTW I Am White.

Do you remember that the most important issue of the 2000 presidential campaign was education? Those were the good old days. Now I don't think most people would rate education in the top 5, or maybe not even the top 10 most critical issues facing our nation today. Let's see, now there's climate change, two wars, a worldwide economic crisis, skyrocketing national debt., an out of control oil geyser in the ocean, corruption in the regulation of coal & oil industries, financial institutions, and who knows what else. What did I leave out? Anyway, I think you get my drift. Thanks for enumerating Obama's accomplishments. It seems easy to forget everything but health care reform.

Thank you iscribble, you are exactly right... what other president walked into so many priority issues their first year.

Other accomplishments include nuclear arms reduction with Russia and the effort to eliminate the spread of nuclear weapons around the world.

This agreement is praised by Global Zero, a movement advocating a world free of nuclear weapons, whose members include former heads of state, former foreign ministers, former defense ministers, former national security advisers and former top military commanders.

Having a President you can respect and look up to is awesome... can't wait to vote for him again.

I couldn't agree more. Though, some may say that passing multi-billion dollar bills isn't accomplishing anything other than increasing our debt. I don't think this is the case here. We're dealing with someone who is, potentially, the most intelligent president we've had since the founding fathers, (who were THE definition of LIBERAL, I might add). These aren't just accomplishments, they are bold steps. Obama is gesturing this government in big bold bright brush strokes; I just hope he can serve a second term so he can finish the canvass.

All that sounds great but how has OBAMA done in fulfilling the promises that Obama made in the campaign to be elected.

Let's just start with what President Obama promised the American people if he would be elected. Someone needs to tell Obama that the election is over and that he don't have to campaign on the road anymore, HE WON THE PRESIDENCY.

Obama said that his administration will be OPEN and TRANSPARENT, he will rid Washington of the lobbyist, provide JOBS, FIX the ECONOMY and it won't be business as usual in Washington when he is elected.

For all of the above, he deserves an 'F'.

If someone can defend that record sensibly, let's hear from you

To his accomplishments in the past 18 months let's add.

Promised unemployment not to go over 8.0% now 9.9%

Government take over of student loans banking industry loses 33,000 jobs

Increase deficit to $3.5 trillion bush left a $630 billion deficit

CBO revised healthcare costs will increase deficit $1.5 trillion

Bailed out union pension funds $300 billion ( taxpayer borrowed money)

Finance reform bill if passed will cost $65 billion

note ! daily interest payments on deficit borrowed money is $1 BILLION a day

Social Security paying out more money than coming in to pay

VA notifies veterans that pension payments will be reduced due to not enough money coming into treasury.

The list is long, if only Bush could of stayed maybe his knowledge and experiences could be of help.

Carolynn N. 24 months ago

Okay that last sentence from J.E. made me laugh so hard some of the water I was drinking came out my nose. To use "Bush" and "knowledge" in the same sentence can only be accurate when stating "Bush has little or no knowledge...of anything" He, Cheney and Bush Sr.and his cronies drove us into this mess at record speed and if I could put them all in a hand basket I'd send it straight to hell. However, I trust they'll make it there without my help.

As for the other aforementioned- I agree he inherited an incredibly broken, messy system with numerous great big, gaping, tragic problems. I am happy to give Obama another 6.5 years to try as best as any one person can to help heal and repair it. I am so proud to know I have a president that has OUR best interest in mind and heart. Maybe not every single move he makes has my personal goals in mind, but I trust that his motives are genuine and good and he will serve the "whole" as best as any one person can. The fact that he is highly intelligent and extremely well spoken is not only refreshing but from here on out should be part of the job description moving forward.

I agree with most of what you wrote. Sadly, the republican party is trying harder and harder to appeal to the "radical right." This has lead them down a path that attacks the president for everything he does, even the items they agree with. The nuclear summit was a good example. The republicans tried for years to accomplish what Obama did in a short time frame. Instead of praise, they found silly and childish ways to criticize him.

Most of what Jon Ewall said is inaccurate or simply not true. However, he is correct on one part. Obama promised to remove special interest and the lobbying from washington, it has increased dramatically under his watch.

Also, I'd like to see him propose some real spending cuts. Medicare, Social Security, and Defense spending making up most of the governments expenditures. He needs to have a serious conversation with lawmakers about making some tough cuts in those areas. Unfortunately, if he mentions that he will cut Defense, the republicans will immediately attack him for weakening the country. I guess they think we need 45,000 troops in germany?

LRC, appreciate the comments... I can't help but defend the fact that President Obama is only one man... an amazing man, but only one man and without any support from the other side of the aisle and many of his own party failing to support efforts to remove special interest and the lobby army not all promises can be kept. This is his frustration as well as ours.

Our responsibility is to support new democratic candidates and even moderate, republican candidates who want what's best for the country and do not cow-tow to McConnel, Boehner, Lieberman (I), Coburn, Graham, Grassley, etc., or burn-outs like McCain.

Participation is the key and knowledge is the power to make it happen!

Well- he certainly is more charming than those crazy people who were in there for what- eons?

Anyway- sorry. I'm glad we've had a change in the guard but it's the same people ruling who always rule.

I do think he's the best republican since Clinton though! I'm 100 years old though...no wait...I'm 60 years old. They tell me I have olds-himers but I can't remember. Thank you KKalmes

kkalmes 24 months ago

Voting for change at the top and not changing the playing field to accommodate change is like changing your underwear and deciding you don't need a shower. You probably still stink, which is exactly what we are seeing in this political arena.

President Obama is cannot be held singularly responsible for the stall if the rest of the team is the same old, same old.

chasmonk 23 months ago

think Ewal works for fox noise or tea partiers... agree with LRC, JE writes poly-sci fiction...

Fiction (Latin: fictum, "created") is any form of narrative which deals, in part or in whole, with events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary and invented by its author(s).

Robert Kennedy Jr Files Law Suit Against BP Oil
Robert Kennedy Jr Files Law Suit Against BP Oil

When Will the Greed Stop and Humanity Prevail?

President Barack Obama gave the leaders of an independent commission investigating the Gulf oil spill marching orders. "They have my full support to follow the facts wherever they lead, without fear or favor," Obama said.

As hurricane season gets its official start Tuesday the outlook for residents in Louisiana and the neighboring states of Alabama and Mississippi worsens, with a widespread fishing ban in place and tourists numbers down. The slick has spread over 100 miles of Louisiana's coast... 29 dead dolphins and 227 sea turtles had been collected in the southern states an above average count for this time of year -- with at least one of each species having visible signs of oil.

"The deaths of dolphins and sea turtles are particularly tragic, because we know we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg with those that have been washed up onshore and tested," said Doug Inkley, senior scientist at the National Wildlife Federation.

Between 19.7 million and 43 million gallons of crude have poured into the Gulf — affecting beaches, wildlife and the local economy and making it the worst spill in U.S. history. BP announced Saturday that its latest attempt to stop the oil, known as a "top kill," had failed. BP will try again Wednesday to put a containment cap on the leaking well so oil can be siphoned to the surface.

Politicol News - Tuesday June 1st, 2010 - Robert Kennedy Jr Files Law Suit Against BP Oil

"The best practices of a corporation also would have BP Oil claim that the US government did not require oil rigs to have a safety shut off valve although other European countries do make that required by their laws. The US under the Bush administration did a favor for his oil friends and dropped the requirements. However, this does not mean that BP oil could not be intelligent enough to not lose its own oil -and put a shut off valve on the rig or the oil rig owner Deepwater Horizon Company."

There are so many voices out there crying for less government and it seems less is not more when it comes to the greed of corporations and individuals. It would not have taken billions of dollars to install a blow out preventer and this would have saved the oil from spilling into the ocean, but someone made the decision to save money... and with thousands of oil rigs in the Gulf it may have seemed like a good idea at the time.

When corporations lose sight of the community they serve and concern themselves only with shareholders and bonuses... all of mankind suffers.

When will the greed stop - when these tragedies hit the bottom line...

Carolynn, OMG thank you... THIS IS A MUST READ eye-opening article on the oil companies and their ambivalence to the environmental catastrophies they are leaving in the their oil wakes. I had no idea the scale of oil spills in Nigeria and the lack of clean-up effort on the part of governments and oil companies. The human tragedies include the reduction of life-expectancies to 40years of age in the Nigerian delta.

    I am shocked!

The United States buys 40% of our oil from Nigeria. We should be insistant that we are not co-conspirators in the destruction of a continent's deltas and coast, and livelihood and the environment worldwide.

      Top 5 Favorite Movies

Who isn't a movie critic? Sharing favorite movies with friends is standard conversation around the fire-pit after a great barbecue while the beers are still cold and tiki torches still burning.

I have found the easiest way to get back shared movies is to place a return address stamp on each DVD jacket... the ones the insurance company sends you twice a year. How many envelopes do we really mail these days?

My favorite list today: Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice , any Johnny Depp especially Chocolat , any Robert Downey Jr especially Ironman , any Leonardo DiCaprio especially What's Eating Gilbert Grape , and Viggo Mortenson Hidalgo.

I love movies and my list could easily be a hundred favorites... send me your favorites and if I haven't seen them I will... also, watch for my breakthrough into films as I am sreenwriting full-time now.

I agree with you about P & P, and Sense and Sensibility is another favorite of mine. Must Love Dogs is currently my fave romantic comedy. I have favorites in just about every genre, but I'll save that for a later time.

I'm flattered that you would ask me advice on optimizing traffic & placing ads, two things I still know relatively little about after 8 months. I have to disagree with some others who say quality is the most important factor in success on hubpages. There are many successful hubbers who have not impressed me with their quality. I think the key to earning is picking the most commercial hub topics, such as giving others financial advice, selp-help hubs, restaurant and product reviews, and writing about dog and cat breeds is apparently another good topic. I don't write about any of the above, I just write what I want, and therefore I have not earned enough to receive a single pay out. That is my two cents worth, and I think that is literally about all my writing is worth from an earnings standpoint.
